Chapter 18

Rylie

I wake up the next morning, still in Derek’s arms. I feel safer than I have ever felt in my life. I try lay as still as I can, wanting to keep the feeling as long as possible. I must have moved a little though, because Derek’s arms tighten around me.

“I know you’re awake babe.” He says in a sleepy voice. I slowly raise my head and look him. His eyes are only partially open and he has a slight smile on his face.

“Good morning.” I whisper. For some reason, I feel totally awkward. Even though, we are in my bed. I feel like I’m out of place. I try to pull away, but his pulls me down to him. He places a hand on the back of my head and pulls my lips to his.

“Good morning, baby.” He says then kisses me softly. He pulls back and looks at the clock. It’s nearly eleven am. “We need to get ready. We got to be at Mum and Dad’s for lunch.”

I jerk away and shake my head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m not going to your Mum and Dads.”

“Well, Mum called this morning. As soon as she found out where I was, she invited us to breakfast. I told her sure. So, you can call her and cancel if you want, let her know that she cooked for nothing.” He finishes with a smile.

“Um, you do know last night changes nothing right?” I say hesitantly.

He turns towards me, looking pissed. “The fuck it doesn’t. We both know everything fucking changed last night.”

“Derek, I’m not ready.” I say quickly.

“For fuck sake! Rylie, it’s been three fucking years. And last night proved you are more than fucking ready, or you would have stopped it, wouldn’t have started to ask about finishing me off, and not invited me to fucking stay.” Oh dear.

I get out of bed and quickly get ready, ignoring the scorching glare I feel radiating from Derek. I finish getting dressed and notice he’s still standing there staring at me. “Please let’s not make this awkward.” I plead to him.

“Not me making it that way, babe. That’s all you.”

“Can we just move on from this, it happened, won’t happen again.”

“Fuck!” he shouts.

I back up instantly. Fearing what could happen next.

“Rylie.” I hear him say, sounding upset. “I’d never fucking hurt you.” He says quietly.

I feel him get close and wrap his arms around me. “I’ll give you what you want. For now. But Rylie, next time, I won’t let you get your fucking way.” Well, that’s something. I just hope I’m ready for him, next time.

Derek

It’s been nearly two weeks, since I stayed the night at Rylie’s. She is avoiding me and doing a damn good job of it. Sure, I still see her when I stop by her shop, but that’s it. She is avoiding my phone calls, ignoring my texts, and she is never home when I stop by.

Three steps forward, five steps back. That’s how I fucking feel right now.
